Maputo, 18 Sep (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Elections Commission (CNE) will train 42,000 members of its support bodies, the Provincial and District Elections Commissions (CPEs and CDEs) ahead of the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled for 9 October.
According to CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica, who was speaking on Tuesday, in Maputo, on the sidelines of the induction ceremony for the election bodies, the training will take place throughout the country, benefiting first members of the provincial commissions and then members of the district commissions.
“It is important and timely, given that there are only a few days left until the ballot. There was this need to train our members to be able to deal with all the electoral operations until the process is handed over to the National Council”, he said.
He explained that the training aims at providing the members of the CNE’s support bodies with the knowledge to be able to handle the election procedures.
Questioned about the budget deficit that the CNE faces, Cuinica said “we are covering the expenditures that need to be made for each phase. There are situations in which we are a little behind.”
“We still have some delays, but these will be resolved. So we’re working with the Ministry of Economy and Finance. And they have always promised that things will be resolved gradually”, he said.
According to Cuinica, some materials [such as the ballot boxes, and the voting booths] are already being distributed to the provinces, while some ballot papers are still missing, “but they will arrive in a week or two and will also be placed in the provinces.”
Cuinica also said that the first half of the campaign has taken place positively, despite incidents in some parts of the country.
“Although there have been incidents here and there, it’s an extremely positive balance, bearing in mind that we haven’t experienced the same scale of incidents that we had in previous elections”, he said.
