Maputo, 20 Sep (AIM) – Residents of the Mbau administrative post, in Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, are concerned at the movements of Islamist terrorists in the region.
According to Friday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, citing local sources, “the terrorists are circulating here every day. The situation isn’t what it used to be. It seems they haven’t given up on this village yet.”
In order to secure normality in the region, the residents have demanded more commitment and vigilance from the Mozambican and Rwandan Forces on the ground.
According to the paper, the terrorists attacked Mbau on 13 September, burning at least six houses belonging to the local populations. Operations by the Mozambican and Rwandan Forces had resumed on 11 September in the dense forests of Catupa, where the terrorists are believed to have re-established their bases.
Recently, the residents of Tororo village, in Quissanga district, also expressed their concern at the movements of Islamist terrorists in the region.
On Wednesday, the governor of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, said that the government has captured the Mucojo administrative post, in Macomia district, from the hands of the terrorists.
However, the governor has called on the victims not to return to their homes, despite the relative stability in the area. He explained that the Mozambican and Rwandan Forces are still working in order to guarantee full stability in the region, therefore those who intend to return must be patient and wait for the go-ahead from the authorities.
