Presidente da República deposita uma coroa de flores na Praça dos Heróis Moçambicanos pela passagem do 4 de Outubro, dia da Paz
Maputo, 4 Oct (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday called for a collective reflection on how to preserve the gains achieved by peace.
According to Nyusi, who was speaking at Heroes Square, in Maputo city, at the ceremony marking the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Agreement between the government and the former rebel movement Renamo on 4 October 1992, “the success of peace in the country demands tolerance and dialogue”.
Since the peace agreement, claimed Nyusi, Mozambique has established itself as a state governed by the rule of law “and dialogue for peace has always been based on trust between Mozambicans.”
“Mozambicans had to recover peace and rebuild the country in order to create a strong and prosperous nation, with the achievement of a platform of understanding that put an end to two decades of war. 4 October is a date for the country always to remember”, he said.
“One of the achievements of peace is the Constitution of the Republic, which, approximately 30 years ago, introduced the system of multi-party democracy, which has so far guaranteed the holding of elections”, he added
Nyusi also said that his government has concluded the Demobilization, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) of former Renamo guerrillas and the phase of paying pensions to the former fighters is almost complete.
The President also congratulated the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) who have been fighting the Islamist terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado since 2017.
For his part, the former President, Joaquim Chissano, who signed the peace agreement, said that despite the challenges of terrorism in Cabo Delgado, the country had made progress “but we need total peace to develop the country.”
“Young people must live in peace with themselves in order to have peace with others”, he said,
