Maputo, 9 Oct (AIM) –Venancio Mondlane, the independent presidential candidate backed by Podemos (Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique), claims that a perfect system was set up to cause fraud during Wednesday’s presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections.
According to Mondlane, who was speaking to reporters, after voting at a polling station in Maputo city, in some regions the voter rolls have been tampered with and the position of Podemos on the ballot papers was changed.
“Podemos was supposed to be in position number 17, on the ballot paper. But this position was changed. In some regions, the party appears in positions 15 and 16. It doesn’t make sense. It’s clear that a fraud was set up”, he said.
Mondlane said that in Nacala, in the, northern province of Nampula, there were disturbances because the voters couldn’t see Podemos in the position previously announced.
“We cannot avoid these extremely serious cases that could impact the final result of the voting. To avoid the impact of fraud, we must flock to the polling stations. We must vote so that the entire fraudulent scheme cannot disturb the will of the people”, he said.
According to Mondlane, if it continues like this, “I think they will be in for a big surprise, because young people are not willing to accept fraud. Young people are not available to watch the corruption of people’s power.”
Mondlane believes that if the claims are not solved in time there will be a major problem “and I will be on the people’s side.”
“We will not accept robbery, the people will not accept banditry like this. The corrupt people of this country have destroyed education, health, industry. They destroyed the economy and created scandalous debts and the level of poverty increased. This time, we will not be peaceful, the matter will be serious”, he warned.
For her turn, Fátima Mimbire, head of the list for governor of Maputo province, backed by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), has called for annulling the voting in Matola city.
According to Mimbire, the polling stations are only functioning with staff (MMVs) consisting of members of the ruling Frelimo party, and the MMVs from the opposition parties are being prevented from participating.
“Elections with only members of Frelimo at the polling stations are not Elections. This is strange because District Elections Director says that the polling station staff should not be expelled from the stations. But, on the ground, the opposite is taking place”, she said, in her Facebook account.
Mimbire promised that “We will soon expose the full names of everyone involved in this. And we are preparing cases against these people. These elections should be annulled in Matola. There are no elections in Matola”.
