Maputo, 12 Oct (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM), during Wednesday’s presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections, shot a member of Podemos (Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique) for allegedly trying to interfere in the vote counting.
Podemos is the party that backs the independent presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane.
The case took place in Búzi district, in the central province of Sofala.
According to Dércio Chacate, police spokesperson in Sofala, the same individual from Podemos physically assaulted police officers, forcing them to take action to restore order.
“It was at this point that the police shot the Podemos member, who was then taken to the district hospital. Thanks to the intervention of the police, the worst didn’t happen. The PRM was forced to shoot and, unfortunately, one individual was hit during this intervention”, he said.
Chacate said the police believe that the Podemos district delegate directed “members of his party to carry out these acts of obstruction of the vote counting.”
“At the behest of the Podemos delegate, the members broke into two polling stations to vandalize them. The PRM was forced to intervene in order to prevent aggression. We also opened another case of election offences in Nhamatanda district, also involving members of Podemos”, he claimed.
