Maputo, 12 Oct (AIM) – The presidential candidate of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party, Daniel Chapo, won last Wednesday’s general election in the central Maputo municipal district of KaMpfumo, with two and a half thousand votes more than his nearest rival, the independent candidate, Venancio Mondlane.
According to the results, declared on Friday by the KaMpumo District Elections Commission, of the 51,587 registered voters in the district, 36,942 cast their ballots, a turnout of 71.62 per cent.
The vast majority of the votes (35,785, or 98.87 per cent) were classified as valid. There were 176 blank ballots (0.48 per cent), and 981 invalid votes (2.64 per cent).
The votes for the four presidential candidates were as follows, in the order they appeared on the ballot paper:
Lutero Simango 1,138 (3.18 per cent)
Daniel Chapo (Frelimo) 18,151 (50.72 per cent)
Venancio Mondlane (independent) 15,721 (43.95 per cent)
Ossufo Momade (Renamo) 775 (2.17 per cent)
This is the first district result that AIM has obtained. All the districts should announce their results by Saturday.
The result is far from definitive. The district results should be consolidated into provincial results by Monday, and the National Elections Commission (CNE) should announce the national results by 25 October.
The Constitutional Council, the country’s highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law, must then validate and proclaim the results, and there is no deadline for this.
