Maputo, 13 Oct (AIM) – Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, are on their way to victory in the traditional Frelimo strongholds in the southern province of Gaza.
The results from last Wednesday’s general elections, announced on Saturday by the district elections commission, showed Frelimo and Chapo winning, sometimes with majorities of well over 80 per cent.
This is in line with previous elections in Gaza, which has always been barren territory for the opposition parties. The opposition can take some comfort from the relatively good showing by independent presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, and the main extra-parliamentary party supporting him, Podemos, in some districts.
Below are the presidential and parliamentary results from Xai-Xai district, Chibuto city and Mandlakazi. Candidates’ names are given in the order they appeared on the ballot paper. The large number of minor parties won less than one per cent of the vote have been omitted.
