Maputo, 14 Oct (AIM) – Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party, and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won last Wednesday’s general elections in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, but almost two thirds of the registered electorate did not cast a vote.
According to the Provincial Elections Commission (CPE), in announcing the provincial results on Sunday, there were 1,406,819 registered voters in Cabo Delgado, but turnout was only 34.21 per cent.
481,249 people voted in the province and 925,570 abstained. The low turnout may be due to the jihadist violence that has plagued parts of Cabo Delgado since 2017. The islamist terrorism has driven over a million people from their homes, many of whom took refuge in the neighbouring province of Nampula.
The Cabo Delgado results were as follows. Candidates and parties are listed in the order in which they appeared on the ballot paper. The percentages given are percentages of valid votes cast.
Presidential election
Lutero Simango (MDM): 17,076 (3.99 per cent)
Daniel Chapo (Frelimo): 281,507 (65.81 per cent)
Venancio Mondlane (independent): 96,843 (22.64 per cent)
Ossufo Momade (Renamo): 32,331 (7.56 per cent)

There were 25 other parties on the parliamentary ballot paper, only two of whom took more than one per cent of the vote. They were the Mozambican Green Party (PVM), with 5,776 votes (1.48 per cent) and Pahumo (Humanitarian Party of Mozambique) which took 4,900 votes (1.26 per cent).
