Maputo, 14 Oct (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Saturday detained the district director of the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), in the northern city of Nampula, for allegedly being involved in the embezzlement of 1.3 million meticais (15,600 US dollars at the current exchange rate).
The amount was intended to pay a food allowance to members of polling station staff (MMVs) as a result of the job that they carried out during last Wednesday’s presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections.
The district STAE director was detained along with his two deputy directors. The theft of the money harmed 300 members of the polling station staff, who did not receive their allowances. These members worked in 730 polling stations.
Acording to a report carried by in the independent TV station “STV”, SERNIC has recovered over 400,000 meticais.
Since part of the stolen money has been recovered, the Nampula provincial director of STAE, Luís Cavalo, assured the MMVs that their allowances will be paid.
“The MMV had decided to stay overnight in this compound, which is in terrible condition. They were demanding their allowances, which will be paid”, he said.
