Maputo, 22 Oct (AIM) – Over 130,000 people are at risk of hunger in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, according to carried by the independent television station, STV.
Much of Gaza is semi-arid at the best of times, but this year the dry conditions have been made much worse by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
El Nino is characterized by the anomalous warming of the surface waters in parts of the Pacific Ocean. This disrupts weather patterns, and tend to worsen drought conditions in southern Africa.
In Gaza, the districts worst hit are Mapai, Chicualacuala, Massangena, Chigubo, Mabalane, Massingir, Guija and Chibuto, which are mostly in the north of the province.
Residents interviewed by STV say that, at most, they are eating one meal a day. They say they need food and agricultural inputs, after the failure of this year’s first harvest.
The Ministry of Agriculture has spent about 11 million meticais on acquiring seven vehicles for Gaza. The Secretary of State for Gaza, Lourenco Lindonde, says these vehicles will be used to boost agricultural production and productivity.
