director-geral do Serviço de Informações e Segurança do Estado (SISE), Bernardo Lidimba
Maputo, 4 Nov (AIM) – The General Director of Mozambique’s Intelligence and Security Service (SISE), Bernardo Lidimba, died in a traffic accident on Saturday afternoon, in Mapai district in the southern province of Gaza.
According to a report carried by the independent television station, STV, one of the front tyres on Lidimba’s car exploded. The car spun off the road and overturned.
There were three other people in the car, namely the driver, Lidimba’s aide-de-camp and an adviser, all of whom were treated in the Mapai district hospital, before being transferred by helicopter to Maputo Central Hospital. They are all said to be out of danger.
The Ministry of the Interior issued a brief statement on Sunday, stating that investigations are under way to ascertain the circumstances under which the accident occurred.
Lidimba had travelled from Mabalane district to Mapai, a distance of about 200 kilometres.
The Ministry said he was on official business, but did not explain its nature.
Mapai is near the Zimbabwean border, and is hundreds of kilometres from the strikes and demonstrations affecting Maputo.
Lidimba was appointed head of SISE in May 2022. Previously he had been Mozambican consul in Malawi, head of the national protocol services, and ambassador to Kenya.
