Maputo, 25 Nov (AIM) – The Mozambican authorities have detained seven Congolese citizens for illegal mining in the districts of Gilé and Mocuba, in the central province of Zambézia.
According to Reginaldo Massorongo, spokesperson of the provincial Directorate of Migration in Zambézia, cited on Monday by Rádio Moçambique, those arrested are refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who entered the country with illegal documents.
“From the reality that we’ve been experiencing in terms of mining, there were reports that many foreigners were there, operating in the mining sector”, he said.
He explained that the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) were sent to the field in order to detain the individuals and ascertain their nationality and legality in the country.
“The Defence and Security Forces found these refugees. Migration had to first check the authenticity of the documents they were carrying and, after contacting the National Institute for Refugee Support (INAR), it turned out that they were indeed from the DRC”, he said.
