Maputo, 25 Nov (AIM) – A group of Islamist terrorists on Friday looted food products after invading the village of Nanquidunga, in Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican Province of Cabo Delgado.
According to local sources, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the terrorists looted especially rice and cooking oil, which had recently been allocated to the local population as part of a food assistance programme. However, there are no reports of deaths or injuries.
“The terrorists arrived on Friday night, they didn’t cause any casualties and they went from house to house asking for food. Then, if someone refused, they took it by force and left”, said a source named Assane.
Another villager, named Sumail Buana, said “it’s true, they arrived exactly a few days after the population received support. They went from house to house asking for food and the population fled out of fear. They took what they wanted and left.”
He also said that the terrorists were in a large group, “but didn’t kill or injure the residents.”
“Carta de Mocambique” also reported that pupils from 20 schools in Macomia district will not be able to sit their final exams as planned by the Education Ministry, as a result of the terrorist presence in the region.
According to Rachide Sualehe, head of the Pedagogical Department in Cabo Delgado, speaking to reporters, the terrorist attacks had forced classes to be paralyzed for three months and three weeks and teachers were told to extend classes until the end of December.
“We reached a consensus that the school calendar will be extended until the end of December. Final exams will not be held in 2024. Instead, teaching will continue during the month of December and the exams will be held from 6 January 2025. The second phase of exams is scheduled for 17 January”, he said.
