Maputo, 29 Nov (AIM) – At least 30 people were injured on Thursday, in the northern Mozambican city of Nampula city, after they were shot by the security forces during demonstrations called by the independent presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane to protest against the allegedly fraudulent results of the elections held on 9 October.
According to Hermenegildo Mulenga, general surgeon and spokesperson of Nampula Central Hospital (HCN), speaking to reporters, some of the victims are in a critical condition and are receiving medical treatment, while others have already been discharged.
“There are patients who are seriously injured and there are others who have been discharged since they were only slightly injured. The injuries are a result of police shooting”, Mulenga said.
On Wednesday, the Mozambican Police (PRM) shot dead three people and injured dozens during demonstrations.
In the Natiquiri neighbourhood, also in Nampula city, the demonstrators are accused of burning down the local offices of the ruling Frelimo party.
