Maputo, 8 Jan (AIM) – Elias Impuire, a senior figure in the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) and a former deputy in the national parliament, has accused Lutero Simango, the party’s president, of being in suspicious negotiations with the ruling Frelimo party.
According to Impuire, cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, members and sympathizers of MDM should be concerned at some of the actions carried out by the party’s president.
“We built the party to be an alternative to Frelimo’s governance in Mozambique, and not for MDM to serve as a department within the Frelimo party”, Impuire declared. “The president meets the head of state in the presidential office, but when he comes back he doesn’t say what was discussed. Meanwhile, we see the numbers of seats in the parliament, which the electoral bodies had announced were four, rising to eight”, he said.
In fact, when, on 23 December, the Constitutional Council, the country’s highest body in matters of electoral law, announced the definitive results from the October general elections, it allocated eight of the 250 parliamentary seats to the MDM. In the previous parliamentary elections, in 2019, the MDM had won six seats.
Impuire has calls for an urgent meeting between the members and the leadership of the party in order to discuss the current situation faced by the MDM. He claims that the lack of meetings is causing MDM members to migrate to other political organizations.
“You’ll notice that, since 2023, the National Council of the party has only met once”, he said. “All this time, the party has been run by telephone, or in other ways that we don’t know about. So the morale of the members is deteriorating and day after day they are losing members in favour of other political formations”.
“The seats in parliament, which rose from four to eight could mean that there has been a switch between MDM and Frelimo, a situation that will be discussed in the proper forum”, he said.
