Maputo, 5 Mar (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have arrested the director of the Namialo Basic School, in Meconta district, in the Northern Province of Nampula, for allegedly stealing computer equipment and foodstuffs, after simulating the invasion and looting of the school by rioters.
According to the Police spokesperson in Nampula, Dércio Samuel, speaking to reporters on Monday, the director, whose name was not mentioned, pretended that rioters invaded the school in order to loot belongings. After the simulation, he stole 57 sacks of rice that were intended to provide meals for pupils. He and his accomplices also stole several computers.
“The director was arrested with two other people, the guard and the warehouse keeper”, said Samuel. “They pretended that the school had been vandalized by rioters, and they took possession of 57 bags of rice (each weighing 25 kilos) intended for school meals plus computer equipment”, he said.
The spokesperson explained that the three detainees acted in concert and then simulated vandalizing the school.
“Investigations are continuing and the police believe that in other cases of destruction and looting at public institutions, there may have been people linked to the same institutions who were interested in the destruction for some private interest”, said Samuel.
Also on Monday, the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) arrested eight individuals, in Maputo city and province, for allegedly committing various crimes including kidnapping, robbery with firearms, vehicle theft, possession of prohibited weapons and criminal conspiracy.
“The eight accused were part of two groups, one of which consisted of three individuals accused of kidnapping a businessman in the Polana Cimento ‘A’ neighbourhood. They were arrested in the course of investigations carried out on the same day as the kidnapping, because they had abandoned a light vehicle and two firearms”, said the Sernic spokesperson, Hilário Lole.
