Maputo, 13 Mar (AIM) – Unidentified assailants on Wednesday murdered Emerson Palmira, chairperson of the Jurisdictional Council of the Mozambican Youth Organization (OJM), the youth wing of the ruling Frelimo Party.
Palmira was murdered at his home in Inharrime district, in the southern province of Inhambane. The killers broke into his house in broad daylight and bludgeoned him to death.
There are reports that the victim might have boasted that he was an “untouchable”member of Frelimo after insulting a group of anti-government protesters demonstrating against the high cost of living
Also on Wednesday, a group of rioters burnt the Frelimo offices in Inharrime district.
The Mozambican police have yet to comment on this violence. But it is unlikely to be coincidental that the attack on the Frelimo office and the murder of Palmira took place just four days after unidentified gunmen shot dead two young supporters of the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in the Inhambane district of Massinga. They were killed inside a car by two assailants who are still at large.
These two victims, Daniel Guambe, aged 28, and Rafito Sitoe, aged 21, were both members of the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), which is now the main opposition party in the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic.
Podemos accused the police of responsibility for the murders, and demanded a full investigation.
