Maputo, 13 Jun (AIM) – Mozambican Foreign Minister, Maria Lucas, has held a meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Wangi Yi, at which the Chinese government expressed its willingness to boost support for Mozambique in the sectors of health and infrastructures.
According to Lucas, who was speaking on Thursday, at the ministerial coordination conference for the implementation of the outcomes of the 4th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held in the Chinese city of Changsha, the Chinese government has expressed its willingness to increase the support granted to Mozambique in various areas of activity, especially the construction of the Surgical Centre at Maputo Central Hospital, the largest health unit in the country, and the health training centre in the central province of Sofala.
Maria Lucas welcomed and praised the “promising” initiative but highlighted several challenges that must be addressed to ensure its effective implementation across African countries.
The Chinese government, she said, would soon respond to two projects submitted by the Mozambican government, one for the reconstruction of the Maputo-Gaza section along National Highway Number One (EN1), and the other on digital interconnectivity.
She also met with the President of the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency, Chen Xiaodong, and the parties reaffirmed the strengthening of Sino-Mozambican cooperation.
“This partnership bears witness to the enduring friendship between China and our continent. Indeed, our partnership is not just about economic gains, but about building lasting connections that can promote trust, win-win co-operation for inclusive growth and shared prosperity in this interconnected world”, she said.
She emphasised the excellent relations between Mozambique and the Chinese province of Hubei, with the successful implementation of a rice project in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, which serves as a model for China’s agricultural investment in Africa.
