Maputo, 1 Jul (AIM) – The Secretary of State for the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, Fernando de Sousa, has warned that the extreme violence carried out by islamist terrorists in some districts of the province is undermining the local economy.
According to de Sousa, who was speaking at a recent meeting in the provincial capital, Pemba city, the terrorists are extorting money from traders on some vital roads and this increases the risks for the local economy.
“The terrorists do not allow traders to do their business in peace”, he said. “They don’t allow the population to produce in peace, because there is constant insecurity. The terrorists also put up barricades on the main roads in order to prevent people from moving freely” he said.
However, he guaranteed that the Mozambican Defense and Security forces (FDS) and their Rwandan allies are doing everything in their power to protect the citizens.
Over the weekend, residents of Macomia district faced moments of panic, following several clashes between the FDS and a group of Islamist terrorists.
