Maputo, 23 Feb (AIM) – The National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), led by former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, has denounced political harassment against its members and supporters.
According to Mondlane, who was speaking to reporters on Sunday, in Maputo, after visiting a police station where members of his party are detained, one of the most recent episodes took place in Xinavane region, in Manhiça district, about 100 kilometres north of Maputo, when members of his party were illegally detained.
Videos showing a group of people (including an old woman) being tortured, in Xinavane, went viral on social media.
“Our members are victims of deaths, kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, and intimidation. These events are an organized campaign of political harassment. Police members and other formal authorities are being used to promote political harassment”, he said.
Mondlane explained that political repression against his supporters has been systematic since 2024, during mass demonstrations aimed at protesting against “the fraudulent results of the general elections.”
The political leader believes that this political harassment is even more worrying because “it takes place in a context of an Inclusive National Dialogue, which should symbolize reconciliation, political openness, and social pacification.”
“Violence and intimidation against our members and supporters occurs almost daily in various parts of the country, creating a climate of fear and insecurity. These actions are not isolated, they are part of political silencing and deliberate exclusion of forces considered inconvenient to the system”, he said.
