Maputo, 19 Jun (AIM) – At least four people were injured after allegedly being shot by the Mozambican Police (PRM) during a popular reception of the former presidential candidate and leader of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), Venancio Mondlane, in the northern city of Nampula.
The tragedy occurred when Mondlane’s supporters took to the streets of Nampula city to welcome him as part of First National Convention of Anamola Party, which will run from 20 to 22 June.
According to the preeminent Mozambican NGO “Decide” Electoral Platform, four people were injured during the reception Mondlane “one of them was struck by a live round, allegedly fired by a police unit, while three others were injured by shrapnel from a dispersal grenade.”
The injured were reportedly taken to Nampula Central Hospital (HCN).
This is another aggression against those who support Mondlane. Over the last month, two Anamola members were shot dead in the southern province of Inhambane and central province of Manica.
Anamola has repeatedly denounced political harassment by the police against its members and supporters.
According to organization, from July 2025 to the present day, over 20 attacks against members of the opposition parties have been recorded.
A video broadcast live on Mondlane’s Facebook page shows at least one tear gas canister being fired by police as hundreds of supporters followed the vehicle carrying him through the city of Nampula.
The march was interrupted by police officers positioned at various points in the city, especially at the airport exit. The moment, broadcast on social media, was tumultuous, with shots fired to disperse the crowd.
The National Convention is Anamola’s major political event since it was officially created in August 2025. The meeting will be attended by 400 delegates and 50 national and international guests.
The delegates will discuss a range of key issues relating to politics, the economy and culture in Mozambique and globally, as well as the party’s future prospects. The programme will include contributions from several national and international speakers, followed by internal elections, including the election of members of the National Council and the Executive Commission.
The meeting will also elect the party’s leader, since Mondlane is currently serving as the party’s interim President.
While key members of Renamo, once the country’s main opposition party, are engaged in internal battles, Anamola is consolidating its position as the main de facto opposition party, by virtue of its political and social relevance.
