Maputo, 27 Apr (AIM) – The Mozambican Bar Association (OAM) has elected lawyer Thera Dai as its new chairperson.
This is the first time that the institution has elected a woman leader in its 32-year history. Dai, who replaces Carlos Martins, won the election with 783 votes, surpassing Stayleir Marroquim, who obtained 463 votes, Pedro Macaringue, with 414 votes, and Samuel Hlavanguane, with 108 votes.
The election took place throughout the country, as part of the renewal of the governing bodies of the association representing the country’s lawyers.
In her first reaction after the results were announced, the new chairperson said that she will promote a more inclusive and representative OAM, focusing on the empowerment of lawyers in all regions of the country.
“It is important that each of these lawyers feels effectively represented with inclusion being one of the essential pillars. Our Provincial Councils will have the mission of aggregating, but also of representing colleagues who are in other provinces”, she said.
Dai assumes office for the 2026–2029 term, in a context marked by high expectations regarding the institutional strengthening of OAM, improvement of the conditions for practicing law, and modernization of the services provided to members.
