Maputo, 13 May (AIM) – Francisco Mitano, former Provincial Director of Health in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, was arrested for allegedly being involved in the embezzlement of 22 million meticais (340 US dollars at the current exchange rate) which was a destined for the construction of a hospital infrastructure.
According to the Office for the Fight against Corruption in Nampula, Mitano is a member of a group that, in2022, embezzlement of 22 million meticais
The Office explained that Mitano coordinated, with the contractors of the works, actions of overbilling and the signing of addenda for unfinished works, with the objective of plundering public funds.
In addition to the former Provincial Director of Health, the authorities also detained an employee of the same institution.
The local NGO Koxukhuru Association also filed a criminal complaint with the Provincial Office for Combating Corruption against the former Provincial Director of Public Works, Rui Ramos, alleging that he misappropriated public funds.
According to Gamito dos Santos, head of Koxukhuru Association, cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, Ramos rigged eight public tenders through his company, MRV Consultoria, which won the bids, “ironically launched by the institution he directed.”
In addition to Ramos, Dos Santos also advocates for the detention of the former head of the Water and Sanitation Service and his wife, for allegedly being involved in the embezzlement of public funds.
