Maputo, 26 May (AIM) – The Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estêvão Pale, believes that sustainable management of natural resources is crucial for development of the blue economy.
According to the minister, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 6th Sino-Africa Forum on Marine Science and Technology, in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, Mozambique is an Indian Ocean strategic destination as it positions itself as an emerging actor in the blue economy and the global energy transition.
Environmentally sustainable technology, he said, must be regarded as an important mechanism for the benefit of present and future generations.
“The true value of our resources is not only in the subsoil or in the sea, but in the way they are managed to promote sustainable development. We should not participate in the blue economy only as suppliers of resources, but also as producers of knowledge, innovation and sustainable solutions”, he said.
He explained that the National Strategy for the Development of the Blue Economy is aimed at the sustainable use of marine resources, strengthening coastal resilience, promoting scientific research and attracting sustainable investment.
The minister also highlighted progress made in offshore natural gas exploration, with reference to the Coral Sul FLNG project and the future development of resources in the Rovuma Basin, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The Coral Sul floating LNG Project, anchored in Area 4 of the Rovuma basin, started operating in November 2022. The destination of the gas produced by this platform, which is led by the Italian Eni energy company, is the European and Asian market.
“We want to deepen cooperation with China in areas such as marine science, ocean governance, environmental monitoring, technological innovation and climate resilience”, he said.
The Sino-Africa Forum on Marine Science and Technology brings together governments, researchers, universities and international institutions to discuss innovative solutions for the sustainable management of oceans and the strengthening of cooperation between China and African countries.
