Maputo, 13 Aug (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has called for the rational exploitation of marine resources since they serve as promoters of the country’s development agenda, which is in line with the conservation of biodiversity.
The president was speaking, on Monday, in Maputo, at the launch of the Blue Economy Development Strategy (EDEA) for 2024-2033, a document that aims at promoting the sustainable exploitation of natural marine, coastal and inland water resources.
According to Nyusi, the EDEA, which was approved in mid-July by the Council of Ministers (the Cabinet), also aims at ensuring that current needs are met, as well as conserving and creating value from marine, coastal and inland water resources for future generations.
“We hope that the Strategy will become a point of reference for all those interested in the marine and aquatic economy, and it would serve as a legacy for responding to the challenges of climate change, including the environmental degradation taking place in the marine world”, he said.
“Nothing can happen without a healthy environment and communities. The greatest guardian we have for any type of our wealth, be it flora, fauna, or marine, is the people, it’s the community, because they are the ones who live there and know what should be done with the environment”, Nyusi said.
He also said that the fact that Mozambique is hosting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Centre for Fisheries Monitoring, a project budgeted at around two million dollars being built in the Maputo municipal district of Ka Tembe, means that the country must strengthen its interventions in the sector.
“This Centre is an important contribution to combating illegal fishing, marine litter and other risks to marine and river ecosystems”, he said.
