Maputo, 5 Jun (AIM) – The parliamentary group of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), in the southern Provincial Assembly of Gaza, accuses the Provincial Executive Council of being involved in the embezzlement of 28 million meticais (about 438,000 dollars at the current exchange rate) out of 30 million donated by the Chinese company Dingsheng to support the victims of the catastrophic flooding that overwhelmed Gaza province in January, especially Xai-Xai city.
Dingsheng operates a factory processing heavy mineral sands, budgeted at 700 million dollars, in Chibuto district.
According to members of MDM parliamentary group, speaking after abandoning a parliamentary session, the money was not channeled to support the floods’ victims, “although it was originally intended to support families affected by the floods that devastated the region.”
However, the Provincial Executive Council rejected any suspicion of embezzlement , claiming that the amount was allocated to three specific categories: the acquisition of kits for self-employment, the carrying out of monitoring activities, and the purchase of 10 tractors.
The current case is not isolated. Last February, Mozambican Police (PRM) arrested senior officials of Xai-Xai Municipal Council, including the councilor for finance (Cláudia Eli), for alleged involvement in the theft of donations intended for the victims of the catastrophic flooding.
