Maputo, 13 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has foiled a kidnapping plot, leading to the arrest of one suspect.
During the operation, authorities also seized firearms, military uniforms, and other blunt instruments.
According SERNIC spokesperson, the suspect was caught with two firearms, a blowtorch, 11 mobile phones, two laptops, military uniforms, a light vehicle, two bags of cannabis, and additional tools intended for the abduction.
The suspect was on parole from 2019 after serving part of a 16-year sentence for armed robbery.
For his part, the 35-year-old suspect denied being involved, claiming that the firearms belonged to a friend currently residing in South Africa who asked him to store them. He further argued that the blowtorch and mobile phones were tools connected to his work in carpentry and electronics repair.
Also on Wednesday, presented to the press a private security guard caught red-handed attempting to sell an elephant tusk. The suspect claimed that he found the tusk in a pile of trash while cleaning a neighboring residence, adding that he was unaware of its nature and had previously given it to his children as a toy.
