Maputo, 24 Aug (AIM) — Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo party calls for stronger measures against the Islamist terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Pedro Guiliche, Frelimo’s spokesperson, who was speaking during the XI National Conference of Frelimo Cadres, which is taking place in the central city of Chimoio, Manica province, the authorities must maintain permanent community vigilance and strengthen preventive control mechanisms against terrorism.
“Although terrorism that has been plaguing Cabo Delgado since 2027 is under control, there is a need to strengthen the fight against insurgents”, he said.
Guiliche also called on 3,000 party members present at Conference to view corruption as one of the main factors compromising Mozambique’s social and economic progress.
“Corruption allows small opportunistic groups to appropriate public funds that should instead serve the majority of the population. These misallocated resources are urgently needed to reinforce investments in key public sectors, including health, education, and essential social infrastructure”, he said.
Beyond financial governance, the meeting placed strong emphasis on building resilient public infrastructure capable of enduring adverse natural phenomena. “Adapting the country’s infrastructure strategy to withstand environmental shocks remains a legitimate and urgent priority”, the spokesperson said.
For their part, the participants agreed that Mozambique possesses the necessary conditions to become a regional benchmark for food sovereignty in the Southern Africa region (SADC), provided the country focuses on producing and consuming its own agricultural goods.
The conference also addressed the management of Mozambique’s vast mineral resources, with participants noting that local communities have yet to feel the direct benefits of long-standing extraction projects.
They also called for raw minerals to be processed domestically to generate local employment, foster community ownership, and ensure a fair distribution of national wealth.
