Maputo, 24 Aug (AIM) – The Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, as leader of the ruling Frelimo party, has encouraged the senior state officials to seek solutions to address the population’s main concerns, especially unemployment and hunger.
According to Chapo, who was speaking at the XI National Conference of Frelimo Cadres, which took place in the central city of Chimoio, Manica province, concrete measures to address the main concerns of the population include the creation of responses to improve the country’s health system, education, agriculture and public infrastructures.
“We must fight against hunger through the strengthening of agricultural production. There is a need to increase food production and improve conditions so that farmers can sell their products to markets”, he said.
Chapo explained that the country’s health system needs to be expanded. “We must improve the provision of ambulances and medicines.” He also called on health professionals to improve treatment, explaining that “it must be based on respect, care, and dignity.”
The President also reaffirmed that the fight against corruption is the government’s top priority “and illegal demands for money in exchange for access to public services and jobs must end.”
Also at the Conference, Domingos Tivane, former National Director of the Customs, called on Frelimo political committee to address corruption and arrogance within the party, claiming that “Frelimo stagnation demands a generational renewal of leadership.”
“Fellow members of the political committee, if there were no corruption in our party, this meeting would have ended long ago. If there were no arrogance, this meeting would also have ended long ago. We would be discussing only the work currently underway, yet here we are going in circles”, he said.
Reacting to the recent resignation of Margarida Mapandzene as Governor of the southern province of Gaza, after being allegedly involved in misappropriation of donations intended for the victims of the floods that hit that province earlier this year, Tivane called on the party to “stop pretending that she stepped down of her own accord.”
“Comrades, in the past, whenever there was deviant behavior, corruption or arrogance, we would gather in a session of this size to publicly denounce such conduct. We have to tell the people why certain leader was clearly dismantled”, he said.
