Maputo, 07 Oct (AIM) – The governments of Mozambique and Qatar have signed an agreement aimed at paving the way for Mozambican nationals to seek employment in Qatar, through regular, safe, and reliable channels.
The agreement was signed by Mozambican Minister of Labour, Ivete Alane, and representatives of the Gulf state on the sidelines of the Doha Dialogue on Labour Migration, held on 5 and 6 October in Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam.
The instrument also establishes a framework for cooperation to facilitate the recruitment and placement of Mozambican workers in Qatar, while providing for stronger protection of their rights and mechanisms to monitor their migration process and working conditions.
According to Mozambican Government, the agreement represents a step towards creating new employment opportunities for citizens abroad, while ensuring that labour mobility takes place through formal procedures and with guarantees of dignity, safety and protection of workers’ rights.
The initiative comes amid growing demand for labour migration mechanisms that can respond to labour market needs while safeguarding the rights of migrant workers.
However, the signing of the agreement does not mean that job vacancies or applications for employment in Qatar are currently open.
The Government is expected to announce, through the competent institutions and official channels, the procedures, requirements and modalities for accessing any employment opportunities that may become available.
Mozambican authorities have urged interested citizens to wait for official information and avoid intermediaries or unauthorized advertisements offering alleged job opportunities in Qatar.
The agreement marks a new stage in bilateral cooperation on labour migration, establishing the legal basis for future employment opportunities for Mozambican workers in Qatar.
