Maputo, 10 Nov (AIM) – The prominent businessman Junaide Lalgy, owner of the company Transportes Lalgy, escaped an attempted kidnapping on Wednesday night in the southern Mozambican city of Matola, after the car he was driving was blocked by two others outside a mosque on National Road Number 4 (N4), which is the motorway between Maputo and South Africa.
To escape the blockade, Lalgy accelerated his car and fled, partially damaging the vehicle. Lalgy is also the owner of the Black Bulls Association, one of the main football clubs in Mozambique.
His family-run transport company was founded more than 30 years ago and operates in 15 African countries, connecting Mozambique with other members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
In November 2019, the businessman’s son, Shelton Lalgy, who was 30 at the time, was held captive by kidnappers.
Shelton’s kidnappers demanded a billion-dollar sum to free the young man. In order to raise the ransom money, Transportes Lalgy put 20 Volvo Model FH13 (6×4) trucks from 2015 up for sale. It is believed that the sale was valued at 3.5 million US dollars.
