Maputo, 12 Feb (AIM) – A businessman from the Mozambican Hindu community, known as Dharmendra, was kidnapped on Sunday, a few meters from a military barracks on Amílcar Cabral Avenue, in the up-market Maputo neighbourhood of Sommershield.
The victim, who is the owner of a bottle store near “Vosso Mercado”, in the military zone of the city, was abducted in the early hours of the morning.
Witnesses at the scene say that the kidnappers were armed with firearms and carried out the crime quickly, with no chance of the victim reacting. Although the scene of the crime is in the heart of the city, the police only arrived later.
This year alone, there have already been three cases of kidnapping in Maputo, including two that were carried out and an attempt that was thwarted thanks to popular intervention in downtown Maputo.
The phenomenon reveals the appetite that criminals have for the kidnapping industry, which continues to sow fear in the business class, while there is still no sign of the Anti-Kidnapping Brigade promised by the government.
Kidnappings, in Mozambique, have been plaguing the business class since 2011. Fear of the kidnap gangs has led some business people to close their establishments and leave the country.
