Maputo, 15 Feb (AIM) – Mozambique has recorded, over the last year, investments of around 7.3 billion dollars in tourism, which corresponds to more than 40 percent of investment projects in the country.
According to President Filipe Nyusi, speaking on Wednesday at the inauguration ceremony of the Ponta Mbembene Lodge, a tourist resort located in the Maputo National Park (PNM), “tourism absorbed more than 42 per cent of the investment projects registered in 2023 with a total value of 7.3 billion US dollars.”
Also in 2023, Nyusi said, tourism contributed 8.9 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to 7.4 per cent in 2022.
“This trend is the result of our government action reflected in the improvement of the business environment, the development of support infrastructures, wildlife restoration and the training of human resources”, he said.
According to the President, the inaugurated lodge is part of one of the best tourist attractions in the country, as well as “another endeavor to protect nature.”
“When we don’t do concrete things like creating spaces, nothing will happen. I hope that the local community will be able to enjoy the benefits of operating the enterprise, including the training and qualification of people as part of the workforce”, he said.
“In addition to contributing to the public accounts, accomplishments of this nature will contribute to the rate of exploitation of forest and wildlife resources for local communities living in and around the conservation areas”, he added.
On Wednesday, Nyusi also inaugurated the Environmental Education Centre, an initiative aimed at protecting biodiversity and ecological balance within the PNM.
