Maputo, 28 Feb (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have arrested four individuals, in Chimoio, capital of the central province of Manica, for alleged involvement in stealing a car belonging to the provincial director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SISE).
The car was stolen on Friday when the SISE director had parked it a supermarket. The theft follow the robbery of documents at the Manica Provincial Attorney’s Office and the Manica branch of the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption
.
According to the PRM spokesperson in Manica, Mateus Mindú, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, “on realizing that the police were nearby, the thieves tried to flee using one of the vehicles that was seized from their possession, which was slightly damaged.”
“During the chase, they ended up stopping their vehicle and unsuccessfully tried to flee into the bush”, he added.
Mindu claimed they were all caught because “the police were ready to arrest the four.”
Mindú said that work is under way to catch the masterminds of this crime, who are thought to be located in the southern province of Inhambane.
One of the accused denied being involved in the crime, arguing that “suddenly, the police arrived and took all of us who were in the car, but I don’t know anything about it.”
Another claimed that the car did not belong to the SISE director at all. “We were detained because it’s my car. They detained everyone because the others were in my company”, he said.
