Chimoio (Mozambique), 1 Mar (AIM) – Unidentified individuals set fire, at around midnight on Thursday, to the house of a district attorney in Manica town, in the central Mozambican province of Manica.
The individuals responsible for the crime are still at large. The fire partially destroyed the residence.
When the fire broke out, the attorney was absent. However, inside the house was his nephew, whose identity and age have not been revealed. He was unharmed.
According to the police spokesperson in Manica, Mateus Mindu, the blaze was put out thanks to the intervention of the fire brigade.
“Individuals arrived and started throwing stones at the house. Then they threw bottles of petrol and started a fire. The reason for the crime is unknown”, Mindu said.
“Investigations are underway to understand the intentions of these individuals. Whether it was purely out of malice or because they had another objective”, he added. “We believe that we will have more information on this case in the near future”.
AIM has learnt that the attorney had been assigned to Manica district for around seven months. When the fire broke out, he had just moved into his official residence.
In recent months, Manica province has seen a series of crimes against organizations and officials linked to the justice sector.
This latest case follows the theft of a car belonging to the provincial director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SISE), and robberies of documents at the Manica Provincial Attorney’s Office and the Manica branch of the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption
