Barco de pesca naufragado meio submerso na Ponta d'Ouro
Maputo, 1 Apr (AIM) – A boat, belonging to the Mozambican National Civil Protection Unit, sunk on Saturday with 11 people on board, on the Umbeluzi River, in the southern district of Boane district.
According to the mayor of Boane, Jubia Bonifácio, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, one person has died as a result of the shipwreck.
“In the early hours of today, we were in the process of getting the boat unstuck and the sailors realized that there was a body underneath the boat and, this morning, when we lifted the boat, we saw the body and it was confirmed that it was the body of a man of around 50 to 60 years old”, said the mayor.
Bonifácio explained that there were life jackets on the boat, but the victim was not wearing one. Therefore, the mayor said, the case is being investigated by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
The reason for using the boat to connect the banks of the Umbeluzi River is that the Mazambanine crossing is submerged due to the rise of the river. The situation worries the population, which is once again demanding that the bridge be built.
According to local sources, shipwrecks are a recurrent occurrence, which means that the solution is to build a bridge so that the people may cross carefully.
