Maputo, 22 Apr (AIM) – The United Nations Humanitarian Aid Office is mobilizing about 413 million US dollars to fund humanitarian programmes in Mozambique.
According to the Humanitarian Aid Office coordinator in Maputo, Paula Serrão, cited by Radio Mozambique, of this amount, around 387 million dollars will be allocated for assistance in conflict situations (for displaced people who are fleeing extreme violence carried out by Islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado).
The remaining 26 million will be used to support victims of natural disasters, considering that the country is cyclically hit by cyclones and heavy rains that cause flooding, as well as by severe droughts responsible for destruction of crops.
According to Serrão, so far only 11 percent of the needs have been mobilized.
She also said that the UN will continue to work with the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD), Mozambique’s relief agency, to assist families who were victims of recent flooding, especially in Maputo city and province.
