Maputo, 22 Apr (AIM) – The Zambezia Provincial Office for the Fight against Corruption, in central Mozambique, has opened two criminal cases against 16 citizens for alleged involvement in embezzling over seven million meticais (about 110,000 dollars, at the current exchange rate).
The individuals, including state employees, are accused of looting the money via E-Sistafe, the electronic management system for state Finances in Namarrói district, Zambézia province.
The embezzlement of public funds took place in 2021.
According to a statement by the Zambezia Provincial Office, some of the suspects work at the Namarroi district secretariat, and the district infrastructure, education, youth and technology services.
At the time of the events, some of the defendants were public servants, and held management positions while others had profiles as E-Sistafe users.
“In order to achieve their intentions, they registered employees with no technical qualifications as E-Sistafe users without their knowledge, assigning them user passwords. They made transfers in favor of third parties outside the instructions, pretending to be creditors of the public institutions in question. As a result, they caused losses to the state totaling 7,556,200 meticais”, reads the document from the anti-corruption office.
The 16 suspects were charged on 11 April, and the case has been remitted to the Zambezia Provincial Law Court for further proceedings.
