Maputo, 31 May (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) arrested, on Tuesday night, in Katembe municipal district, in Maputo city, a 35-year-old man for allegedly carrying out serial murders of women in Mandlakazi district, in the southern province of Gaza.
The alleged serial killer, according to Rádio Moçambique, was caught thanks to work undertaken by Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
The police claim to have rescued 28 people when they were about to be lynched by a mob because of the crimes committed by this individual (whose name has not been released).
The alleged murderer tried to fake his death when he was captured. He woke up in the morgue. From there, he was taken to Hospital to receive medical care. When he woke up in the hands of the Police, he confessed to his crimes.
“When I calculate, I have killed 11 people so far”, he said. “The first person I killed was my wife, with whom I was living in Veterans’ Square, in Maputo city.
He was arrested for this crime, but escaped. “It was the first time I had ever seen a cell”, he recalled. “When I managed to escape from jail, I met another wife in Manhiça and I also killed her for cheating on me. From there, I went to live in Mandlakazi where I killed nine other women”.
“I don’t know why I was murdering women and I apologize” he added.
The crimes took place in March and April, creating a wave of unrest and popular demonstrations in Mandlakazi district.
The arrestee was a fugitive from the Mabalane penitentiary, where he had served six years in jail, out of the sixteen he had been sentenced to for killing his wife.
