Maputo, 6 Jun (AIM) – The Mozambican Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, has admitted that the country lacks the ability to combat cyber crime effectively.
According to Magala, who was speaking, on Wednesday, in Maputo, at the opening of the Mozambican technology fair (MOZTECH), which is being held under the theme: “Cybersecurity-Challenges of Digital Transformation”, there are gaps in the country’s ability to fight against cyber crime.
In order to improve the fight against cyber crime, Magala said that the time has come to move on from discussions to action.
“Last year, we were here in an in-depth conversation about Cybersecurity and today, a year later, it’s time to do some self-reflection on how far we’ve come in this area. Unfortunately, I can’t say that we’ve progressed as much as we’d like”, he said.
The government, he added, recognizes the importance of digitalization and cyber security but the country has not been as successful over the past year as it would have liked, “so the time has come to take concrete steps.”
“Addressing fundamental aspects of Cybersecurity can bring many benefits to the country. However, the challenges that the country faces include insufficient funding and specialized knowledge. In order to overcome these obstacles, we need to create partnerships with international institutions”, he said.
According to the minister, creating partnerships with international institutions and private sector entities may bring necessary skills and resources, taking into account the creation of laws and regulations to strengthen cyber security.
