Maputo, 21 Jun (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and the executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Jorge Moreira da Silva, met on Thursday, in Maputo, to analyze the impact of the project on supporting populations affected by islamist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The project in question was designed by the Mozambican government and financed by the World Bank, and is being implemented by UNOPS.
“Today we had the opportunity to present the results. The project is progressing at a very significant pace”, said Da Silva, speaking to reporters, at the end of an audience granted to him by President Nyusi.
He said that there had been significant progress in social support and socio-economic integration, and also in the area of infrastructure.
“We are building 134 infrastructures, including 41 schools, and 24 health facilities, but also community markets and water supply systems. It’s a programme that will run until the end of 2025”, he explained.
According to Da Silva, during his visit to the Cabo Delgado provincial capital, Pemba, and to various districts and localities, he saw that the projects are progressing at a good pace.
“I saw that the population is very happy with the way UNOPS is carrying out the programme. 97 percent of all those involved in this programme are Mozambican, of whom 49 percent are from Cabo Delgado. It shows that this programme integrates and involves the community.”, he added.
Da Silva also explained that, during the meeting with the President, opportunities were identified for future areas of collaboration, with UNOPS providing support to the government in the area of infrastructures, taking advantage of its experience in the resilience and sustainability of infrastructures.
“I’m sure it will be a long-lasting partnership”, he said.
