Maputo, 13 Jul (AIM) – Florindo Nyusi, the son of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, caused a serious traffic accident on Friday morning in central Maputo, in which two children were injured.
According to Maputo City police spokesperson Lionel Muchina, cited in Saturday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”, Florindo Nyusi was driving a Mercedes Benz along one of the city’s main thoroughfares, Julius Nyerere Avenue, when it slammed into the back of a second vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner. The Toyota then hit the two children, both of whom are seven years old, and were wearing school uniform.
Eyewitnesses said that Nyusi Junior had been travelling at high speed. The photographs of the Mercedes after the crash show severe damage to the front of the vehicle, consistent with a high speed impact.
Florindo Nyusi did not wait for the police to show up, and he made no attempt to take the injured children to hospital. Instead, he left the scene, in the company of his security personnel. In other words, Nyusi Junior became a hit-and-run driver. The fact that neither he nor his security guards went to the aid of the children makes the incident a criminal offence.
A passer-by took the children to Maputo Central Hospital. Medical staff confirmed the entry of the two children. One, whose knee was injured, was discharged later in the day. But the other, who suffered a head injury, was kept in hospital for observation. She is, however, out of danger.
The police say they are investigating the circumstances of the accident, to see if there any grounds for opening criminal proceedings.
This is not the first time that Florindo Nyusi has been involved in a traffic accident.
According to Friday’s issue of the weekly paper “Savana”, in February 2022 the car of Nyusi Junior collided with the vehicle of Miguel Bila, head of production of Mediacoop, the company that owns “Savana” and the daily newsheet “Mediafax”.
Bila was driving home after closing that week’s issue of “Savana”. More than two years later, Florindo Nyusi has not yet paid for the damage caused to the Mediacoop vehicle.
