Maputo, 22 Jul (AIM) – Mozambican sugar production, in the 2024/2025 campaign, may reach 210,000 tonnes, an increase on the previous season, when production was around 200,000 tonnes.
However, according to the executive director of the Association of Sugar Producers of Mozambique (APAMO), Orlando da Conceição, cited by the Maputo daily “Notícias”, this production is still below the real capacities of the national industry, largely as a result of the shutdown of the Maragra sugar mill in 2022 due to flooding in the Incomati Valley.
“Even though the quantities do not match the industry’s capacity, production will continue to meet the demand from the national market. Over the last 10 years, sugar production in Mozambique has averaged around 350,000 tonnes/year, in a context where the country absorbs only half of this quantity”, he said.
Da Conceição explained that, in some years, Mozambique does not consume even 50 per cent of the quantities produced, which means that the availability of sugar on the Mozambican market is not threatened.
“Although the Maragra sugar mill is paralyzed, other producers, such as the Xinavane mill in Maputo province, and Mafambisse, in Sofala, continue to contribute so that the market doesn’t face a sugar crisis”, he said.
He also said that, at the moment, the industry’s biggest concern is the illegal entry of foreign sugar into the country, which may jeopardize national production.
