Nampula (Mozambique), 27 Jul (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday declared that work and vigilance are the best tools for defending the country.
He was speaking to a group of young people in Murrupla distric, in the northern province of Nampula, after inaugurating the connection of the Nihessiue administrative post to the national electricity grid.
He noted reports that young men are being bribed with promises of jobs in the neighbouring province of Cabo Delgado, but when they reach their destination “they die, because they are at war”.
Nyusi urged his listeners not to allow islamist terrorists to deceive them. “We shall defend our country, and the best way of doing that is through work, but first we must be vigilant”, he said.
He stressed the importance of bringing electricity to the administrative posts to improve the quality of life of their residents. “One of the ways to create jobs is to bring electricity”, he declared.
Electrifying the administrative posts, Nyusi said, “is part of our agenda of governance to develop Mozambique, which is not just the big cities, such as Nampula, Nacala, Beira or Maputo. Mozambique is large and if we want to develop the country, we have to develop each parcel of this territory. We are here to implement our ambition to see all of Mozambique illuminated”.
“Our goal is the welfare of all”, he said. “It is to reduce social inequalities and create an environment of peace. For if we do not have good health, food, electricity and housing, we will not have the tranquility necessary to develop our country”.
Also on Friday, Nyusi inaugurated a rehabilitated water supply system in Murrupula town, budgeted at 215 million meticais (about 3.4 million US dllars), co-financed by the Mozambican and Dutch governments via the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
The old water system only had the capacity to supply about 5,000 people. The rehabilitation and expansion of the system has raised its capacity to benefit 34,000 people, though currently it only supplies 14,300 with clean drinking water.
