Maputo, 28 Aug (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have arrested 10 people, including a former member of the country’s armed forces (FADM), for allegedly killing three motorcycle taxi drivers in the central province of Tete.
According to PRM spokesperson, Feliciano da Câmara, cited by the Portuguese News Agency Lusa, the ten, who were arrested last weekend, belong to two gangs involved in robbing and murdering three motorcycle taxi drivers between 13 and 23 August in Tete province.
“Three motorbikes that were stolen from these victims have already been identified by their families. We are working in coordination with other forces to verify if one of those arrested was really a member of the armed forces”, he said.
According to the PRM, at least four motorcycle taxi drivers have been murdered this year in Tete, out of a total of 27 murders recorded in that province. In the central region of Mozambique, there have been several cases of murder and assault of motorcycle taxi drivers in recent months, with the aim of stealing their bikes.
In April, the Manica Provincial Court, also in central Mozambique, sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the murder of two motorbike taxi drivers in 2022.
