Maputo, 4 Sep (AIM) – Unknown individuals, believed to be islamist terrorists, burnt down six houses last Thursday, in the locality of Sambene, in Mecufi district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the individuals also burned down two other houses, on Sunday, in Meriha neighbourhood, Chiúre district.
According to local sources, the incidents occurred at night “and the perpetrators have not been identified. The little that the families had was destroyed.”
A relative of one of the victims said that the situation is worrying and has exacerbated the difficulties of the displaced people sheltering with relatives and acquaintances.
The Police have not yet addressed the case publicly. However, sources say that two people have been arrested for their involvement in the burning of houses in Sambene.
The local authorities say they are working to identify the perpetrators.
The arson in Mecufi and Chiúre come at a time when Cabo Delgado is still experiencing terrorist attacks.
At the beginning of this year, the insurgents carried out several terrorist attacks in Chiúre district which culminated in the destruction of a health centre, a market and several homes, as well as the group kidnapping dozens of people.
