Maputo, 12 Oct (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) on Friday rescued a 34-year-old businessman of Asian origin who had been kidnapped in the morning, in central Maputo.
According to Hilário Lole, spokesperson of the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), speaking to reporters, the rescue operation took place in Tchumene neighbourhood, in the neighbouring city of Matola.
“We have confirmed that another kidnapping took place this morning, at around 08.30 in downtown Maputo, in which a citizen of Asian origin (whose name has not yet been revealed) was the victim. The kidnapping was carried out by three individuals travelling in a light vehicle and armed with two AK-47 firearms”, he said.
Lole explained that the victim was rescued after the car used by the kidnappers got stuck during a police chase in one of the neighborhood’s streets.
“This forced them to abandon both the car and the victim on the spot. The Police had disseminated information to various fixed posts in the city and province of Maputo, which culminated in the rescue of the victim in Tchumene neighbourhood a few minutes later when these individuals were being followed by a police patrol”, he explained.
“The victim is in one of our police units and is in good health”, he added.
According to Lole, work is underway throughout the Matola Gare neighbourhood to capture the kidnappers.
