Maputo, 11 Oct (AIM) – Venancio Mondlane, the independent presidential candidate backed by Podemos (Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique), claims that the data so far processed by his supporting team show that he won Wednesday’s election with 51 per cent of the votes.
According to Mondlane, who was speaking to reporters on Friday, in Maputo, in 25 per cent of the polling stations already processed by his team, he is in the first position, while Daniel Chapo, candidate of the ruling Frelimo party, comes in second place.
“The figures show that 51 percent of the votes went to Mondlane and 41 percent to Daniel Chapo. At the moment, we are leading by at least 10 percent over Frelimo’s presidential candidate”, he claimed.
The results seen by AIM so far do not justify this claim. Instead, they indicate a victory for Chapo, with Mondlane in second place
Mondlane said that if his victory is confirmed he will be open to a peaceful transition of government, without resorting to “other means.”
“We call for a peaceful and democratic transition”, he said. That would involve “the unequivocal declaration of victory”, followed by setting up “what we call a governing commission for peaceful transition, so that there is no need to move on to other forms of struggle and resistance”.
Mondlane also accused Frelimo of manipulating the results since many districts in the country do not have the “objective conditions to complete the intermediate count. So they are fabricating false results sheets (“editais”) with higher numbers than those who actually voted.”
