Maputo, 14 Oct (AIM) – Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won last Wednesday’s general elections in Maputo city, with around 54 per cent for Chapo.
The city-wide results are the summation of the results from the seven municipal districts, and were announced by the Provincial Elections Commission (CPE) on Sunday.
There are 676,757 registered voters in the city. The commission announced that 426,389 had cast their votes – a turnout of 63 per cent.
The results declared by the Commission were as follows. The candidates and parties are listed in the order they appeared on the ballot paper.
Presidential election
Lutero Simango (MDM): 10,893 (2.86 per cent)
Daniel Chapo (Frelimo): 204,117 (53.68 per cent)
Venancio Mondlane (independent): 128,669 (33.84 per cent)
Ossufo Momade (Renamo): 36,560 (9.62 per cent)
Parliamentary election
MDM: 25,912 (6.34 per cent)
Frelimo: 236,310 (57.76 per cent)
Renamo: 51,635 (12.82 per cent)
Podemos 83,963 (20.53 per cent)
There were 12 minor parties on the parliamentary ballot paper, none of whom won more than 0.7 per cent of the vote.
The city results, and the results for all the provinces, remain provisional until they are approved by the National Elections Commission (CNE), and eventually validated by the Constitutional Council.
