Maputo, 16 Oct (AIM) – Sérgio Cipriano, administrator of Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, has announced that over 100 individuals who used to be islamist terrorists have recently surrendered to the authorities.
According to Cipriano, cited by Rádio Moçambique, the individuals are Mozambican nationals who were in the ranks of the terrorists responsible for carrying out extreme violence in the region since October 2017.
The individuals in question are now “in the neighborhoods of Mangoma, Mpanga and Naitope. They have returned to their communities”, said the administrator.
“They have regretted their actions and have returned to their villages of origin, where they are now involved in traditional productive activities”, he added.
Cipriano also said that there are reports of terrorists who want to leave the forests and are trying to find out from the communities information on the pardon decreed by the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi.
